Millions of $$$

I’ve worked in the field of Business Intelligence for over 7 years. During that time, I have saved multiple companies millions of dollars!

Yes. You read correctly. I have saved multiple companies MILLIONS of dollars.

Some of you might be thinking, “Wait a cotton-picking minute here! How does this guy who talks about unicorns and monster trucks do THAT?!”

That’s a good question, but first I want to tell you WHY I’m even bringing it up.

HINT: It has to do with money…and you.

(And no, I’m not selling anything here today. Instead, I’m giving away something for free.)

ON-line vs OFF-line

The word “online” sometimes causes people to forget that “online business” is just another type of “business”. While I’ve only started THIS blog within the past half year (I have had others), I have been studying the online business arena for much, MUCH longer, not to mention the fact that I’ve been working with offline business for years.

In fact, if you’ve talked to me on Skype, phone, or in person, you probably know that I take notes on every conversation I have. I read through the entire archives of those with successful online businesses (yes, even when they stretch back a few years). I mine the comment section of other blogs (as well as my own). I interview people in the community. I read (on average) almost a book a week. I treat Twitter like it’s a chat room and use it as a giant data gathering orgy.

Why this seemingly insane need to hoard information? Because my goal is to become the expert in ON-line business using the same techniques I use for OFF-line business.

I’m extremely passionate about online business and I’ve made it MY business to gather as much data regarding online business as possible. But I don’t stop at the act of just gathering data. Rather, I apply the same Business Intelligence techniques to the world of ON-line business as I would to an OFF-line business.

Why? Because I want to bring the same value to ON-line business as I have to the world of OFF-line business (remember the “millions of dollars” part from earlier?)

So what exactly does that entail?

Let’s get back to that “millions of dollars” part

[Topics are always more exciting when there is a dollar symbol present, wouldn't you agree?]

So how exactly DO I save companies millions of dollars? In short, I create structures and processes that do the following:

  1. Save time
  2. Enable better decision making

That’s really it! Ok, I know you want more detail so here you go.

Here are 5 more specific ways that I use Business Intelligence to save millions of dollars:

1. Convert data into information

One of my main functions is to turn data into information. While many people would say that is semantics, I regard data as the whole set of numbers and attributes that a business collects or creates while information is something that can be used effectively for business decisions.

Business Intelligence creates processes that convert data into useful information.

2. Identify significant points of interest

The companies I have worked for create millions of rows of data yearly. Buried in those millions of rows of data are significant points that upper management prefers to base their decisions upon. When those points are difficult to find or go unnoticed altogether, uneducated and poor decisions are often made. Conversely, when significant points are easily identified, better decisions can be made.

Business Intelligence enables better decision making by creating structures that identify significant points of interest.

3. Free people to do more creative work

If someone is doing the same task over and over, it needs to be automated. Unfortunately, people often think that means I’m trying to eliminate their job. The truth of the matter is that I’ve yet to find even ONE corporate job that could be eliminated by automating someone’s repetitive tasks (many lower level people are often so overworked that they have tons of stuff they can never get to).

Instead, by automating tasks I free people up to move on to more exciting and creative things. (And no, this is not just something I’m telling myself to feel better.) The truth is that people are amazed at how much more enjoyable their job can be when the repetitive things become automated (they still get credit for them since I work WITH them to automate the tasks). In addition, the entire business benefits when repetitive tasks are automated and people are able to do work that they were previously too busy to address.

Business Intelligence automates repetitive tasks and frees people to be more creative and productive.

4. Aggregate multiple sources of information

Regardless of size, every company I’ve worked with has multiple sources of data. This ranges from corporate databases to personal spreadsheets. It’s one of the reasons WHY there are millions of rows of data.

My job is to logically combine multiple data sources to produce one single, coherent picture. THIS is one of the most exciting parts for me. When done well, you have a larger representation of a company than any of the smaller sources do on their own. I love being the first person to see this aggregation and watch as I introduce others to what I’ve created.

People are ALWAYS in awe of how cleanly their information can be represented by someone who is passionate about this process. New and better decisions can be made when multiple sources of data are combined logically.

Business Intelligence combines multiple sources of information for the most complete picture available.

5. Streamline the process

Above all, I streamline these processes; there would be no benefit if the work was moved from others onto myself. Instead, I leverage technology to save time and enable better decision making. (Understand that the streamlining process is very involved and requires someone with a passion and a high level of technical understanding for it to be successful though.)

Business Intelligence leverages technology to enable better business.

Note: You may have noticed that these things do more than just SAVE money, they also help to GENERATE money. It’s easy for me to say that I have saved companies millions of dollars because I can see how much time and money was previously spent on a task. Even MORE exciting is the unquantifiable amount that I’ve helped generate. I would venture to say that I’ve enabled decisions and work that generate way more than I’ve helped save.

Why I love Business Intelligence

There are two reasons I love Business Intelligence:

  1. Money
  2. More money

As you can see, the first reason is money. Because of the knowledge required, I am able to command a high pay for my services. (See how that dollar symbol makes things more interesting!)

The second reason is MORE money, only this time I’m not referring to MY bank account. I know that I can use Business Intelligence to help OTHERS save and make more money.

But let’s return to the most important part of this whole post…

What this has to do with you

You’ve already seen how this all has to do with money (unless you have REALLY bad skimming skills). Now I want to tell you what this has to do with you!

Want to know if I’m talking specifically to YOU? Tell me if you fit these descriptions:

  • You either have a business or have considered starting one
  • You want to conduct your business online
  • You need to save time learning and just DO your business
  • You need to be enabled to make the best possible business decisions
  • Your goal is to make more money

If that describes you, then YOU are the “you” I’m talking to.

I love online business. I love reading about branding, launching products, networking, “making money online”, and all of the other topics that relate to building a business online. I love reading about the technical, psychological, and economical aspects of why things work or don’t. I love reading the entire archives of people who are making money online. I love it. All of it!

I AM FREAK-CRAZY PASSIONATE ABOUT ONLINE BUSINESS!

This matters to you because you probably could care less about all of that stuff; you just want to do YOUR thing and make money.

We’re a match made in heaven!

The final component to my freak-crazy passion is making YOU successful.

Like I said at the beginning, I’m not selling anything. I’m not looking for you to buy anything that I haven’t offered before. I’m looking to make people successful.

Why? Because, like I already said, I LOVE THIS STUFF!!! And I know that the next step to learning is teaching what I know to others and then watching what THEY do with it.

So here’s what it all ultimately has to do with YOU.

  1. IF you fit the description of “you” from the previous section and
  2. IF you are looking to take your business to the next level

THEN I want to coach you.

Again, I’m NOT selling anything. Yes, I mean for free. I’m looking for a small number of people to coach one on one and help make THEM successful.

I’m not talking about a one time session. I’d rather talk with you and assess your needs and make a plan together on how to make you successful.

If you are wondering whether or not I am being a scammy bastard, here is the honest to goodness truth of why I’m not charging yet:

  1. I love this stuff
  2. I want to make others successful
  3. I want to take my learning to the next step by teaching others
  4. I love this stuff so much that I want to do it full time
  5. I want to fully develop a course I WILL be charging for
  6. Also, I’m blessed to currently be making six figures at my “day job” so I can afford to be patient

Yes, I intend to charge for this going forward.
Yes, I charge corporations a lot for this now.
No, I won’t be cheap going forward.

If this sounds like a match made in heaven to YOU, then let me know. Contact me here and tell me you want to be successful.

I’m super excited about this as I quietly mentioned it to a few people and got great feedback. But, I’m only making a few spots available so that you will have my utmost attention.

If YOU are the “you” I was talking about, then let me know.

I look forward to hearing from YOU!

    David,

I LOVE this post. I’m going to comment on each section separately and hopefully add some insights into this comments:

    1) Data to Information: For the sake of bloggers, let’s use Google Analytics as an example. I think analytics are useless for the first 3 months. But once you have a large enough sample size, the value goes up. One of the problems I see is people checking these stats, but not drawing any insights from them. If you draw insights you can make adjustments to your strategy.

    2) Signficant points of interest: I guess this really is about insights. That’s how I came up with my inner circle concept (I should get a nobel prize for that :) ).

    3) Freeing People to creative Work: The more people you have doing this kind of work the more value people can create. I keep telling people that they need to stop wasting time on tasks that don’t add value. With my ADHD, I’ve turned into an advantage because I can focus all efforts on value based tasks and then when my attention span is shot, I focus on things that are not of value.

    4) Streamlining: One thing I”m doing this week is making a list of everything that I”ve done over the course of the week so I can start thinking about which things are a waste of time, so I can outsource them to a VA.

I’ve tweeted about this and I think people would be out of their minds not to take you up on this. Good stuff.

      Srini,

So glad you dug this post! It’s interesting that the same philosophies that I’ve had in my corporate job serve well in online business. It’s also been really cool to dig through other people’s successes and stories and find the common threads that match with offline business…especially the ones that tend to make people successful.

Figured it was time to start working my magic for the online world too. :D

PS – Thank you for telling people about this. I’ve already had a few people contact me and am super excited!

    1) Twitter is a giant data orgy – LOL

    2) I want to shadow you at work for a day when I come to Dallas (before Tim, mind you).

Great post! I just emailed you on this :)

It’s true. Twitter IS a giant data orgy. HAHAHA

Emailing you back very shortly. :D

Don’t forget the main reason you saved companies millions. They pay you for 40 hours and you worked 70. Salary based jobs. Biggest scam of the Century!

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Man, don’t I know that! Thankfully I had some pretty cool bosses during those times. ;)

Like Srini, I adore this post. Now, four years ago when I was first treading into the waters of brick-and-mortar business, this post would’ve made my eyes glaze over. It takes some real world adventures in business {offline or online} to realize how absolutely essential business intelligence is to a thriving enterprise. If we choose to ignore BI, we’re floundering in a sea of guesses and false logic.

You have so much value to offer the online biz community, David, and I love seeing how you’re leveraging the amazingness you’ve wrought OFFLINE and bringing it to online entrepreneurs. So smart.

You’re going to make a great coach.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

      Thank you! You rock. :D

I find that I’m most happy with a good balance of real world application and bizarre references to imaginary creatures. Most business related matters tend towards being very stuffy in my world so I like to lighten them up a bit and make them more approachable to people. I realize this may have the negative effect of discrediting how serious I take my area of expertise, but it is a risk I am willing to take in order for people to hear that might normally be turned off by the typical approach. You are correct in that more often than not these types of discussions cause people’s eyes to glaze over…hence the whole unicorn bizarreness.

If nothing else, people will be jarred from their slumber when they encounter the unexpected reference. ;)

I like Abby’s comment talking about how your content resonates with us because we’ve been through the fire, so-to-speak. Most people would prefer to skim a meaty article like this one but if you do that you can miss the gems!

Also to comment to David’s reply: the mythical creatures you intertwine with your business savvy is perfect. You’re mastering the art of market polarization and you’re clearly making it work for you!
