How to make money without being a scammy bastard

Big announcement today

You want business?

You want customers?

You want customers to give you money?

Then you’re going to love me, because today I announce something that I think will help you tremendously…while preventing you from looking like a scammy bastard!

And it’s 100% free!

The “scammy bastard” part

I hate the commercials on TV. Regardless of what anyone tries to tell me, I know that they are significantly louder than whatever show I’m watching. They don’t come quietly into my front room and attempt to persuade me of their message. No, they invade my house and rape my ears in hopes that I’m going to want to buy their crap after being mentally molested.

There’s no way I could ever do that type of marketing.

Aside from the moral and ethical reasons of why I shouldn’t rape someone’s ears, even if it worked, it’s not something I can do financially. I don’t have the funds to make that kind of campaign come to life.

On a much smaller scale I see Twitter fill up with “CLICK ON MY LINK AND BUY AMAZING STUFF FROM ME THAT YOU’LL DIE IF YOU DON’T HAVE” from people who don’t engage with others. I get emails from people telling me about how they have the latest cure for the world’s problems and how it’s priced much lower than it’s worth so I should buy it now before it runs out (even though it’s a digital product).

Now, I don’t mind someone injecting links to their stuff at all. I also don’t mind emails that ask me to buy stuff.

What I mind is people that don’t care about me asking for those things. Because what they fail to realize is that they’re asking for my precious, hard-earned cash…and I couldn’t care less about what they’re selling.

Who DO I want to give money to?

People that make me love them!

Naomi Dunford at IttyBiz.com posted an article last week about how to make money with your business. To boil it down, the two part plan is this

  1. FIRST make your customers love you
  2. THEN ask for money

Notice the order of those steps. If you’re trying to do step 2 first, you’re doomed (much like the scammy bastards I just discussed). Chances are pretty high if you are reading my site that you don’t have the funds to do a molestation style ad campaign like the ones on TV, so we’re at least safe there.

In fact, the chances are pretty high that you’re bootstrapping it just like me.

And yes, I know it’s tempting, but we all need to stop trying to blast everyone with our message. Instead, we need to be focusing on loving the people whose attention we are seeking.

If you’re a regular here, I’m going to assume that I don’t have to waste the rest of this post convincing you of the logic in this plan. I do have the smartest readers on the internet!

Love first, then (and only then) ask for money.

Story time

Since this “Love first, sell second” is a message I have been trying to live by for the duration of my online life (and more), it struck a chord with me when I read Naomi’s post. It just made so much sense and I loved seeing someone post it who is much closer to where I want to be than where I currently am.

However, I would probably have done little with the actual message had it not been for some of my online friends.

So, here’s that story:

Last week I got a Twitter DM from Abby Kerr. She had copy/pasted the following invitation from another Twitter friend:

Anyone care to join me in a 28-day Make Your Customers Love You challenge, inspired by @NaomiDunford? http://is.gd/eFFDf #customerlove

Her next DM was asking if I wanted to join her.

It looked cool. I had read the article and remembered how much I liked it. But as much as I wanted to join, Cautious David responded with this:

Ok, bottom line: How much is it?

(Don’t you love how I just beat around the bush?)

Abby’s a cool cat so, even though she should have called me a cynical cheapskate, she let me know it was free. That got my attention.

I was in.

I did a search on the hashtag #CustomerLove and discovered that a number of people were on board. Bonus!

However, even though I was in, I was curious as to who had the idea and guts to put together this challenge. I mean, here is someone that decided that they actually wanted to ACT on something they read online! (If only more of us did that, right?!)

LaVonne Ellis

LaVonne Ellis writes at CompleteFlake.com as well as a few other sites (check out her About section). I had connected with her on Twitter just a few weeks earlier and was already enjoying the conversations there. And it doesn’t hurt that for some odd reason, she thinks my Twitter profile picture looks like Leonardo DiCaprio’s long lost brother. (I don’t see it, but cool nonetheless!)

I liked what her message was and she treated people well. I loved that she was showing initiative and responding to a challenge. I really loved that she wanted to involve others and help them too.

So I reached out to her. I wanted to be a bigger part of this!

I approached LaVonne and asked how I could help. Her desire to love on the people around her matched mine. I wanted to make sure this woman succeeded. I wanted to do anything I could to make sure this challenge succeeded. (And I really wanted to do my part to reduce the obnoxious molestation style marketing if I could!)

Long story short, LaVonne agreed to let me partner up with her.

The announcement: Customer Love

LaVonne and I have about as varied pasts and views as you can possibly get. However, despite gender, political, and a host of other demographic differences, we absolutely see eye to eye on loving your customers first! (Not only that, but she has some awesome stories that I’ve not heard from anyone else online!!! She’s rad so you need to follow her on Twitter!)

Which is why we think we have something awesome to offer people!

Starting today we will be working together to bring you a 28 day challenge to make your customers fall madly in love with you. We’ll be offering tips on how to do this as well as actionable items for you to…well, take action on. We’re also targeting people who have amazing skills and specialties to guest post and offer you “How To” advice that is above and beyond what we could bring you by ourselves.

By the time you read this, LaVonne will have already posted the first article on her site CompleteFlake.com. Tomorrow, yours truly (that’s me) will be posting the next article (also on her site).

I’m super excited about this and can’t wait to see the impact we hope to make on people.

How can YOU be a part of this?

Simple:

  1. Join in the challenge with us
  2. Tweet up a link to this post
  3. Check out LaVonne’s post
  4. Then start loving on your people!

That’s it. Now, let’s rock this!

SPECIAL NOTE: Our guest posters list has not been finalized which means that if YOU have a unique point of view on how to get your customers to fall in love with then we want to hear from you! Let me know in the comments or shoot me an email.

Let’s go get some love!

I am definitely up for the challenge brother, thoughts and ideas were just running through my mind as I read this post.

Gotta say, this is the coolest challenge on the Internet, why? Because finally something of GREAT value is free! Which is awesome. I will start riding my thoughts and organizing them into a post as soon as I submit this post.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Wilson, I’m super excited to see what you put together. You are great at showing people that you care and I love that about you. Glad to see that I’ve already enlisted someone. ;)

    • http://www.wilsonusman.com Wilson Usman

Thanks man, it’s easy to do good things when you’re
surrounded by people that are doing good things. This is
such a great project and haven’t really seen anything
online that I can compare it with.

    Yippie!!!

    That’s all….Tweeting about this now.

  • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

    Hey, David! –

I’m so excited that you & @LaVonneEllis are co-spearheading this. I read a little secret about a certain little domain being set up {LaVonne mentioned it in the comments of her post announcing this Challenge}. Very cool!

I’ll most definitely be getting in on the guest posting action and encouraging my readers to participate.

As I was saying to Srini {@blogcastfm, @skooloflife} this morning on Twitter, having something to launch at the end of the 28 days is key to seeing if the *financial* benefits of this Challenge will be reaped. I have a feeling anyone who participates earnestly will see rewards of other kinds long before the 28 days is up, though — more blog comments, more RTs, more Twitter action in general, more FB page likers, more inquiries, etc. Everybody better get ready!

I also appreciate how the 28 day timeline puts the onus on us to get our butts in gear with product creation and product launching. I’ve had a small jewel of a product in mind for months and have been hesitating on just going for it! {Planning to use Dave Navarro’s {@rockyourday} Product in a Weekend plan for creating it.

Hope your week is off to a rocking start!

    – Abby

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I love Navarro’s ‘Product in a Weekend’ plan! So smart! Goes right along with what I constantly say regarding us knowing stuff that other people want to know.

I think you are right in that having something to launch will make a big difference to those of us doing this. But I also agree that we will see giant rewards long before then. For me, the benefits that will come from the journey are huge to me so I’m loving this whole idea.

Can’t wait to see what you put together!

  • http://speakclearlyonline.com LaVonne Ellis

David, you ROCK. I can’t think of any better words than that, unless you want me to talk about Leo DiCaprio & you again. And I’m pretty sure you don’t. :)

For anyone reading this, I just want to share what an amazing couple of conversations we’ve had planning this. That’s right – two. Right, David? My memory is bad, but I do recall how we clicked right away on everything that matters: we want to base our work in love.

Makes me misty all over again.

Thank you for offering to help with this, David, and then for becoming a full-fledged partner. I really needed a co-conspirator. :)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I’m so grateful for your initiative and willingness to let me in on your diabolical plans.

All we need now is sharks with friggin lasers!

  • http://www.everydaybright.com Jen Gresham

Cool! Sounds like fun. I’m going to be out of the country for 11 days at the end of Sep, but I don’t suppose I should use that as an excuse not to participate, should I?

Nothing to lose, everything to gain…

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Maybe I’ll be able to give some helpful advice; I’ll actually be out of town for the third week of the challenge and look forward to figuring out how to love my customers while not tied directly to a computer. Thank goodness for my delicious HTC EVO smart phone!!! LOL

You do bring up a good point about continuing business while out living your life. Definitely something for me to think about. :D

  • http://www.theskooloflife.com Srinivas Rao

    David,

Considering we’re working on a product together which will probably take about 28 days to finalize, I think your timing is awesome :) . I’m really excited to make customers fall in love and maybe some nice single girls along the way. Right, this about business. When I see something like this I’m even happier that we chose to you to be our partner on the podcasting guide. So, we do have a product to launch :)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I’m more than happy to send some nice single girls your way. ;)

I’m also super excited about our podcasting guide. I, like you, have fallen totally in love with podcasting and can’t wait to share our very practical guide with people. But don’t tell anyone…it’s a secret. ;)

      LOL

    • http://www.theskooloflife.com Srinivas Rao

This will make your day. go check the search volume
for the keywords “how to podcast.” It ain’t too shabby.

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

      I’ve actually wondered if there is some kind of underground online biz dating program going. If not,. someone needs to start one. I’ve often thought that our corner of the blogospohere woudl be a great place to meet people, if one were single. {I’m not.}

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

Sorry about the typos. David, your comment box for replies runs off the page and doesn’t allow to see the 2nd half of our lines. At least it does for me. Not be-yotching, just informing. :)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I know, I discovered that recently. All getting fixed in site redesign coming in the next month-ish.
      ;)

      Sorry.

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

Site redesign? I’m impressed by how someone with a full-time dayjob can get done!

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

      Make that ‘how much.’ Argh!

  • http://www.AndMyAssociates.com/ Brandon

I’m in! This will be a great encouragement for me.

I’m @twtBrandon on Twitter if anyone would like to follow.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Brandon, I’m looking forward to what you come up with. Saw that you have a big announcement coming tomorrow and am excited to see what it is.

  • http://www.delightspecialist.com Chris Anthony

    Dave and LaVonne,

This is a great idea. I fully endorse it. :) If there’s anything I can do to help – promote, write a guest post, etc. – please let me know.

    -Chris A.

    • http://speakclearlyonline.com LaVonne Ellis

Fantastic, Chris – thanks! We’re still trying to get over the amazing response so far and have no idea what help we might need, but we’ll definitely be looking in your direction when we firue it out. :)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Chris – As LaVonne said, we are addressing the awesome responses that we have received and working on a plan to promote the community around this challenge. (Saving your email now. :) )

  • http://www.AndMyAssociates.com/ Dahlia

Hah! Very true, indeed they are much louder than the shows! How rude can that get? This is how marketing gets its bad reputation – the vivid memory of an obstinate, inflicting salesman.

We all know that with love is respect, if people feel they are not respected then no business will thrive in that atmosphere, no matter how loud and intruding the marketing strategies become. Because in reality, you don’t ask people for respect, you gain it – if you deserve it.

This idea of ‘love first and then money later’ is fantastic. People will actually love giving out money, not because the idea is forced into their heads, but because they know it’s all worth it.

    I’m definitely with you! ?

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I love your statement that love is respect! It’s so true and so evident when businesses decide to not respect and love their customers.

And this is something I wish everyone would remember (myself included): People will actually love giving out money, not because the idea is forced into their heads, but because they know it’s all worth it.

So excited to have you on this journey!

  • http://www.intentionalinfluence.wordpress.com Timothy Morris

I am trying this out. I can not wait to see what the results look like after I ramp up the number of people in my tribe make a few announcements to them and give away a free e-book to them all.

Anyone want on my list. Follow me up. I will hit you back. Thanks y’all.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Love that you are joining us! You bring a lot to the community and I know we will benefit to have you along!

  • http://www.stevescottsite.com Steve

I absolutely love the title! I think most people feel like you do, it is not the IDEA of having someone try to sell you something it is having them do it in a scammy way without having any sort of relationship first.

When you take the time to care about people they will care about you. Once you have a good relationship getting some sales for quality products is easy. They hard part is creating a relationship in the first place.

  • http://www.ricardobueno.com Ricardo Bueno

David: I’m a fan of Naomi. This looks like an excellent challenge and it’s going to be great to read and follow along.

My Tip: Do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it. Nothing makes a customer more happy. And a happy customer is an invaluable asset. They praise you and refer you and that sure beats cold-calling and winning new clients who don’t know who you are.

    Great post David,

And I want to thank you for submitting it to the Blogs With Wings Blog carnival. It was a very refreshing take on getting customers – by loving them. I feel warm and fuzzy all over! :)

I also want to note that your description of television commercials is dead on. I hate them. I love how you painted such a vivid picture of “ear rape”. I too am their victim, damn spammy bastards! LOL

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I loved the carnival! Such an awesome way to all get together and play nice!!!

I’ve always been a very relational/community type of person. It’s been so cool to see how I can center my business motives around that personality online. I love that people feel warm and fuzzy all over and I’m talking business stuff!!!

And yes, ear rape is AWFUL!!!

I started skimming this post at first, but you got me with your great personality, David. Now I am hooked and want to know more about this challenge.

Off the check out LaVonne’s site.

PS Came from Cori’s blog carnival – I was a part of it as well.
