Effective IMMEDIATELY: This blog is now under new management

Same owner, different management

I recently went back and read through a bunch of my archives and realized something.

Like most people, I have a few different versions of myself. There’s the “I want to end you because you cut me off in traffic” David which I’ll be discussing in my next post. There’s the “I heart unicorns” David. There’s also the ”Daddy who dances to Lady Gaga with his daughters before Mommy gets home” David (FYI – if I DO ever release videos of that, it will be a paid membership site as apparently the demand for it is high).

And then there’s the “Corporate” David who is put together and clean shaven. He writes with authority on any subject he presents and is just short of being sterile. Actually, he usually DOES come across as being sterile because that’s a bit of an asset in the circles he has to move in. High level people rarely care for infusions of personality when reading about enterprise wide data-centric issues…so THAT David doesn’t really inject them that often.

I’m fine with the “Corporate” David existing since he serves a very useful purpose and because, frankly, for now he brings home a much bigger salary than the David that is taking over this blog. But as I looked back through my archives, I realized that the “Corporate” David had somehow slipped in and was running things without ever being invited to do so…so I’m taking it back from him.

Remember last week when I was throwing chairs against the wall? That was the first official act of kicking him out. It was a bit of a trial run.

The comments, the retweets, the emails, and the conversations that occurred because of that post confirmed something for me: THAT is the David that is supposed to be running this place.

So…what’s the difference?

Well, in the role of this David, I tend to be a lot more informal when I talk. I sometimes get mushy and say things like “I love my readers” (which I ABSOLUTELY do). I use lots of smiley faces (and parenthetical statements) in my comments and Tweets. Much to the dismay of “Church” David, I also swear more than “Corporate” David. (Actually, “Church” David couldn’t care less that I swear more; he’s more concerned with helping people who are hurting. I like him a lot!)

I tend to be a bit more ADD or ADHD or whatever they call it when you start talking about something and then…OMIGOSH LOOK! SOMETHING SHINY! (I’ll try and keep that to a minimum though so as not to drive anyone reading this too crazy.)

I still fully intend to share with you things that I find useful on this journey of mine. Technical stuff. Marketing and business stuff. Pointless stuff. But I intend to do it as if you came over to my house, sat down in my front room, and we started drinking while talking about all of those things. The major difference between that scenario and what you’ll actually be getting is that we won’t have the kids running in every few minutes to tell us that they just went potty and requesting that we go look at their masterpiece while applauding the whole thing…though that might be higher quality than some of the stuff that I turn out sometimes.

Tell me again, what prompted this?

Basically, I’ve realized that I don’t just read blogs because of what I can learn from them. Sure, that might be what initially brings me to the site and catches my attention. But the truth of the matter is that once I’m there, I’m looking for a person to connect with. I’m looking for someone who I’d actually want to hang out with in real life.

I got to be that person last week when Mark Lawrence from Lifestyle Ignition came to visit me and stayed with me a few nights. When someone is sitting at your kitchen table, you talk to them different than if they are just reading your site. Mark got to see the real me. (Incidentally, he also got to see my wife, my kids, my two dogs, my brother, my mom, and my dad!) I had much more fun just being myself (video is forthcoming of me jumping in a lake with my clothes on) than I have had writing as “Corporate” David.

I’m not looking for a textbook, so I thought it odd when I looked back over my archives and discovered that I was turning into one on my own site. (Seriously, that “Corporate” David can be such a hypocrite! Loser.)

I’m hoping you like the new management. I can tell you, he’s much more fun to write as!

OMIGOSH LOOK! SOMETHING SHINY!!

(Hopefully those shiny things are your comments! Mmm…delicious comments. OM NOM NOM NOM!)

Reading your post, I knew that I wanted to leave a comment, but truthfully by the end, I was scratching my head about what I wanted to say. Do I agree with you? Disagree? Something else? I don’t know.

Your passion is your family. Your path to change leads through this blog. If Corporate David got you off track of that, I’ll be honest. I didn’t notice, but then again, I haven’t been counting your blog comments or retweets. The David that writes this blog and leads this community needs to be the David best suited for the job…or maybe the Davids best suited for the job, because at the end of the day, that David is going to have to go back to his stakeholders (the family) and say, “This is what those extra hours away from you, lack of sleep, bit of stress, and whatever else got you.” It could be a happier dad, a little more money, or a bit of recognition, but if the wrong David runs this show, it could just as easily be time lost, money spent, or a few more arguments.

As far as I’m concerned, I continue to see value here regardless of which David is running the show. Keep it up, buddy. Follow your plan. And, choose the David that gets you closest to your goals.

I’m glad to know that the stuffy David wasn’t ruining the show. Gives me a little more confidence in his abilities. Perhaps I’ll have him guest post from time to time. (Is it weird that my first guest post would be from one of my multiple personalities? Hmmm)

I love that you referred to the fam as “stakeholders”…and that you are dead on with that too!

You continue to support and encourage me and for that I am super grateful!

    OMI GOSH!

That phrase makes me laugh every single time because I can actually visualize you being *that* excited :)

Your personality is what makes you you. Don’t be afraid to use it.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

What’s funny…is that I actually say it probably exactly like you are imagining! Ha!!!

I think making my personality a main character on this blog will yield better results than even the best textbook post.

  • http://www.stretchd.com Nick Laborde

I can totally relate, I have that multiple personality thing going on too. I recently fired my corporate guy … hopefully he won’t come back and shoot the place up …

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

See, that is what I’m afraid of. I did make sure to let him go on a Monday so that he still got paid for the whole week. There’s also an agreement that he may come back and do some guest posting. I’m really hoping he doesn’t file for unemployment though since that would break the bank!

And I sure hope there’s no coming back and shooting! Maybe I should write him a recommendation on LinkedIn. Ya, that’s it!

  • http://www.lifestyleignition.com Mark Lawrence

Let your personality shine through! David you are an awesome individual, down to Earth and full of life! I like your idea of writing and interacting as if someone came to your house and sat down in your front room. It was great meeting your wife, kids, brother, parents, dogs, and neighbors!
Being yourself, is a great because you don’t have to put on this alternative persona. Normally this alternative corporate persona is dry. It works in real life, though it’s the pieces of your personality that bubble to the surface that people can identify with. In the online realm your personality is much more important in terms of how you connect. Looking forward to seeing more of that here!

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

They loved meeting you too! You were even the topic of conversation for a moment at dinner tonight (and were multiple times throughout the weekend). It was nice for someone online to see my personality if nothing else but to have some accountability for how I am online. Let’s hope that the similarities between the two outnumber the differences!

As my Southern “hood’ friends (homies) would say – “Real talk!”

I love this dude! That’s not saying much, because I love everything you usually put out on this blog (except for those things that I don’t) – How’s that for ADD? ***SQUIRREL!!!***

Being real is actually harder than you think. It’s funny to listen to folks talk out in public (I just had a great chance to do this while sitting and people watching in an airport in Colorado). There’s a lot of chatter going on, but not much is being said.

If you ever need any fuel for Corporate David, just plug this bad boy in, and you’ll be ready to team-meet, present, and coffee-machine-it-up with the best of ‘em! -> http://www.erikandanna.com/Humor/bullshit_generator.htm

Looking forward to reading from the guy that I’ve talked to so many times :)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

OMIGOSH! I love that movie and every time the dog says SQUIRREL I wanted to laugh so hard. And seriously, a bird named Kevin?! HOW AWESOME IS THAT!!!

      Ahem…

Thank you so much for your kind words, dearest reader. (And the link which you shared is also a thing of wonder!)

  • http://www.intentionalinfluence.wordpress.com Timothy Morris

I have no problem with the various roles and personalities that you have. The truth is that we all do. I know I do at least. When you allow them all to run together a bit, it allows us to see all the struggle. That is the real you. I enjoy reading you.

The reality is that we are all different and we all have multiple hats – if you only had one persona then we would only see one facet of you and most likely it would only hit me at one facet of my persona as well.

Just a thought. Take it or leave – just adding into the conversation.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

I think you make a great point, Tim, in that we DO all have multiple personae and that allows us to connect to people on multiple levels. I’m sure that while I’m making a point to allow the more personal side of myself to take center stage, I will indeed allow other facets of my personality blend to enhance my writing.

It’s an interesting thing, this “finding your voice”. It’s not like the natural act of talking or engaging with people. There is a whole art to how you choose to engage someone with your writing. Thankfully I gave myself a pass early on and told people this was a journey…so I never feel bad when it takes an unexpected turn. :)

  • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

Om nom nom on this :) :

Like Eric and Timothy in the comments, I enjoy and can connect with all of the voices that you’ve put out there and I actually don’t find *any* of them dry and corporate-y. {But I’m all for the increase in parenthetical statements, especially when they’re nutty or self-effacing.} Sometimes your content is more personal in nature and other times you’re staying within the lines {as in, a piece that could be syndicated as an article}, but I think that’s okay. I think I do that over on my own blog, too.

The concept of “which voice” and which side of oneself to lead with on a blog is a toughie. I’m still mulling it over myself, for myself.

And I, for one, am ready for the video{s?} of you and Mark Lawrence. And the coming clean about your obsession with Tab. It’s really been keeping me up at night.

    {Hope you guys had fun.}

    • http://joelrunyon.com/two3 Joel | Blog Of Impossible Things

I love that “om nom nom nom” phrase. Cracks me up every time.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Just like “OMIGOSH”, that is actually a phrase that I use in real life. My boss probably hears it more than anyone else since we eat lunch together most days. Don’t worry, I don’t say it while eating…just in the getting ready phase!

    • http://joelrunyon.com/two3 Joel | Blog Of Impossible Things

Apparently I do! My sister makes fun of me for it. I don’t appreciate it very much =)

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

It’s funny that you say that you struggle with the finding of your voice to; I seriously think you have it all together on that front. Always interesting what we think we lack in that others think is great! I’m also excited to see that so many people were not noticing the dryness in voice that I detected. Again, perhaps it is a thing of intense self criticism. (Yay! A sign that I am truly an artist!!!)

You can’t even know how amazing those videos are going to be. I’m pretty sure we’re going to win a Nobel Peace Prize for those babies!!!

  • http://www.biggirlbranding.com Cori Padgett

Ha..Love this post David. :) I honestly didn’t noticed “dry” David either… I hear “you” in everything I read. BUT I am all for getting a little tousled, wallowing in informality, and in general having fun with what you do, so if the new David does that more than any of the old David’s.. welcome home! ;) Oh and the OM NOM NOM NOM comment cracked me up… instant visual of Cookie Monster. LOL Xo

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Well, I will say that the Committee of Davids is quite pleased that so few people were noticing the dryness of one of our members. Due to the high confidence ratings that we are receiving it might be possible that Corporate David will not be entirely eliminated from the site but rather just demoted to janitor and occasional guest poster. ;)

Certainly the new CEO David (apparently he’s promoted himself in the past day) is much more likely to allow himself to be tousled (love that word) and loves the informal.

The Comment Monster has greatly enjoyed the OM NOM NOMs that have been provided for this post!!!!

    Hi David,
I’m really new to your Blog/Site,(‘found you’ via the #customerlove challenge), and immediately checked out your ‘About’(me) page …

Glued to the screen I was blown away by what and how you had written.
I immediately ‘followed you’ on twitter and subscribed by email. Now I mention this because as I was checking out the remainder of your home page etc. I discovered the above post: and as I began reading, I was horrified! I was thinking oh no, not the corporate David, not after I’d ‘fallen in love’ with your original statement & purpose!!!!

Whew, you can imagine my immense relief as I continued reading and discovered your authentic self was reclaiming you!! Yay!!

Thank you David …you’re greatly appreciated and needed in this changing reality we live in!!
    warm regards

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Lindy, I’m so blessed that you loved my About page! It’s funny because I wrote that at the very beginning…and I can see my true voice in that page even though Corporate David started taking over not long after (we still keep him on retainer for the boring stuff). I love that you were “horrified” when you thought I was leaving.

I look forward to getting to know you! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment; I love it!!!
