Podcast Episode #1 – Interview with Srini Rao

Today is the first episode of the new podcasting strategy that I mentioned Tuesday.

Some quick things
I learned that if you want a quick adrenaline rush, make your very first interview with someone who interviews “A-listers”. Srini Rao writes at The Skool of Life and is the host and co-founder of BlogcastFM. An avid surfing enthusiast and blogger, I was fortunate enough to snag a bit of his time for my first interview and am thankful for how gracious he was. I enjoyed doing this a lot!

I intentionally focused on questions for those who have yet to start blogging or still in their first year. Grab a pen and paper and start taking notes; lots of good stuff here!

Note: It might help some of you to know that, for the most part, I grew up in Dallas, Texas. That means the “g” is silent for me on most words ending with “-ing”. Felt you might like to know that ahead of time. (I’ve never actually realized just how much I did that until I listened to this podcast myself. I mean, I sound like everyone that lives here so it never stands out!)

Mentions
I also learned that when you interview someone who interviews people for their blog, you have a lot of names to keep track of! I think this is everyone we mentioned:

Great interview/podcast. Whenever you get around to it, I’d love to be able to subscribe to these in iTunes.

Thank you, Eric! I enjoyed doing it.

I’ve started looking at the submission instructions for submitting it to iTunes and will add it shortly. Glad to know I already have someone interested. :)

Wow, David, are you a man of action or what? I’m so impressed that you launched your podcast already! And totally psyched that Srini was your first guest! {I’m a devoted BlogcastFM listener. Now guess who *else’s* podcast I’m devoted to?} Interesting to hear Srini’s voice as the interviewEE this time. Srini, so many good insights and tips — thanks1

By the way, David, you did a TERRIFIC job — relaxed, casual, engaged and engaging. You’re clearly a natural.

Now, David, any advice for us aspiring podcasters that you’ve learned from your first go?

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Thank you!! I was actually really nervous about doing a podcast…which made it a logical next step, right? :) Srini was fantastic! Super helpful and understanding of a first time interviewer. So thankful that the experience was as enjoyable and relaxed as it was.

I’m so happy that I came across relaxed and engaging! I was actually sweating to death (nerves and Texas heat were getting to me) so I’m thankful it was not a video podcast. Ha! I wrote down a bunch of notes from having listened to myself a few times (in order to get all those names and because, well…I wanted to hear it again). I could easily foresee me putting together something from a new adopter once I’ve done a few of these.

Any questions you’d like me to be conscious of?

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

I must be in “weekend mind.” :)

What’s a “new adopter,” and when you asked me about questions I’d like you to be conscious of, do you mean what questions would I be interested in hearing your interviewee’s’ responses to? Sorry I’m so dense!

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Ha, I totally understand the “weekend mind”. :)

By “new adopter”, I just meant new adopter of using podcasting as a strategy. Regarding the questions, I meant what is it specifically you’d like to know regarding how to podcast. However, I see that you sent me an email so I’ll take it there.

Anyone else wanting to know what I’m learning just holler and I’ll share with you too. If there’s enough interested, I’ll share it with everyone.

Nice job David.. this was extremely well done for a first podcast. If this is a sign of where you’re going you’re the next Howard Stern (or some other popular radio guy).

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Ross, thank you so much! Once again you are a huge encouragement to me. I’m pretty sure my wife would freak at Howard Stern so I’ll probably have to go with her fave Kidd Kraddick (he’s technically another David too!)

This is so excited David! Congrats on getting your first podcast done! I just finished listening to it! This is the start of something great! This is so honest and down to Earth Srini. I really like this medium. “Be yourself because everybody else is taken” This really is an incredible group of people all helping each other try to succeed. Seriously awesome stuff.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Thank you, Mark! I can tell that I’m probably going to get the bug bad for doing this. LOL Already plotting planning my lineup for who I’m going to come banging on email doors for next interviews. As you know, a few people in these comments already have been targeted!

Oooh, I thought my ears were burning! Great to hear the Interviewer being interviewed so David, thanks for turning the tables on Sri. He does sound great and heaps of fabulous tips for bloggers and anyone really. I find his at attitude wonderful and very motivating.

Now, I hope the experiment to get you new blog readers through interviews works out. I have a feeling it will so kudos to you for being so proactive! I will now do my little promo tour of twitter/stumble/fb for you:)

    Happy blogging everyone!

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Annabel, hopefully the burning wasn’t too bad. ;) It was great fun (albeit nerve-racking) to interview the interviewER and so insightful!!

I really liked your interview and listened to it twice; once in the car and once with a notepad handy. Your statement about blogging less than a year not being worth it rings so true for me. I almost feel like those who’ve made it watch and wait to see who really has the drive to stick it out. I hope that my strategy works, and yes, you are correct in that it is part of my overall strategy in using blogging as a component to a larger business. It’s a huge bonus that it was fun too!

And thank you so much for doing a promo tour for me! The casbah is rocked by you!!

It’s really fun to see the interviewer getting interviewed. Man Srini you’re all over the place I remember the first time when I had a chance to meet your through lifescapeartist.com I don’t know whatever happen to that project…Anyway this was such a great interview I not only got some really great ideas with this podcast but also got a chance to connect with David for the first time.

Props to you David for 71 days of blogging it shows that you’re definitely focused and in the right direction. I don’t see how with everything you’re doing how you could fail. I like the blog and the content is great. And the design speaks for itself.

Take care looking forward to more of your stuff.
