Podcast Episode #3 – Interview with Ross Hudgens

This week’s podcast was with Ross Hudgens of Billy.com and RossHudgens.com. First off, let me say that Ross was a trooper in working with me in getting this done. As I was out of town on business (and because Murphy’s law was in overdrive), we had a ton of technical difficulties. In the end, I had to record the phone call using Google Voice and then download the files. Even better? Around the 10 minute marker…the call dropped. I put in a little audio cue for you to know where that is. I’m sure you’ll catch it.

(Ross, you rock for having the patience to deal with the technical difficulties. I promise, that is not the norm!!)

Ross Hudgens
Ross contacted me within the first few weeks of starting my blog. I liked the fact that he was up front about connecting authentically but with also a business mindset. I’ve gotten to know him a bit more over the past few months and am impressed with what he does with getting blog traffic, which made him a likely candidate for an interview.

In today’s podcast, I really hit Ross up on his knowledge regarding how to increase your site’s traffic and things to do to increase your SEO. He was great at giving practical and actionable tips to start using to increase your traffic. Like myself, Ross is intentional about online relationships and brings a different perspective on how to best leverage them as a blogger.

By the way, if you aren’t following him on Twitter already, you should do so: @RossHudgens

PS – Sorry if the quality on this one is a bit off; like I said, I had to record it via Google Voice which did great considering…but is not ideal.

Ross, David, Thanks… Well, it’s good to actually hear people’s voices. But anyway, back to the subject I like what you said about content “create great content and be confident of it” I believe that a lot of the new bloggers give up because of the problem of self-confidence…they don’t have it and it shows in their writing.

I’ll be honest when I wrote my first post on my blogger.com blog that I started 18 months ago (that probably nobody know about)I didn’t feel confident about it. Until I started doing it more and more often. But the moment of truth started to happen when I started answering question that I had on my head. I figured if I have these questions, there has to be at least one person out there asking the same question.

Hey Ross thanks for the twit ideas you put in my head and the bits of SEO that you talked about where good too, some new content ideas from this post, keep them coming David.

I agree that the confidence part is something that a lot of new people struggle with. I think it’s because we’re so timid of our first time to insert our voice in to the conversation and people calling us out on it. You are right that responding to questions is a huge boost of confidence. Whether the questions are your own (knowing that others will have them too) or you get lucky enough that you catch an actual question from someone, they always seem to have a much higher rate of engagement.

I personally LOVE answering the questions since I know at least one person is looking for that post before I even hit submit.

Thanks Wilson. I really believe if you’re starting a blog, you must think that you have what it takes to get it done. If you’re half assing it, don’t do it. Because you have to go full bore to get the thing done and be successful – if you lack the confidence, it just isn’t going to happen. And this is just the interent! I think something that helps me is that even though tons of people can see your post, only one can see it at a time. There is no public speaking. Just lots of one-on-one consulting sessions!
