Podcast Episode #4 – Interview with Abby Kerr

Abby Kerr
The first time I clicked on Abby’s site AbbyKerrInk.com, I was pleased to see something that looked a little bit different than the normal business and marketing style of blogs that I usually encounter. It wasn’t clean lines and Web 2.0. This lady had swirls on her site! Blue and lavender swirls! As the father of two girls, I can’t help but notice when something has a confident feminine quality to it.

It didn’t take long to figure out that there was a confident feminine voice behind the swirls. Abby isn’t just writing about theory, she was the owner of a brick and mortar shop that she closed to pursue an online business. We connected and developed a quick friendship through the magics of the internets. Recently, I even ranked her as one of two women in my band of merry men.

In addition to being a sharp lady who seems to know of almost everyone online, she was a super fun person to interview! Delightful and fun, she has a great sense of humor and laughter that made her a joy to talk to. Her advice is practical and conveys her passion for what she is doing.

Certainly, now that I’ve interviewed her I am confident that the nickname I gave her before holds true. I hope you enjoy listening to the First Lady of Niche-y-ness, Abby Kerr.

Mentions
Like my interview with Srini, Abby knows of a ton of people. Lots of names were mentioned. We talked afterwards that the purpose of mentioning these names is not to look self important, but the fact that both of us have learned tons from these people and want to share the love with anyone else willing to listen to us. Check out the people listed here; you won’t regret it!

You truly had some fun but you really said some interesting stuff, and that comment that you made about “we want to connect with an experience” and you really hit it on the nose.

I didn’t know that JBT was in Cleveland, I live so close to him…thanks for letting me know that. BTW the mentions here are great people, I admit I don’t read every single time they post, but I have read at least a post from each.

Oh and with you on the garyvee bus too, I’m waiting for “the thank you economy” to come out, I think that’s the title right…hopefully we’ll get a shot at getting an advance copy.

@AbbyKerr I gotta say that you really sound like a great person to want to work with, this was a fun podcast, what I really liked was the laid-back, cool, non-jargon conversation full of great content. It’s funny you mentioned the rhhbschool, just yesterday I watched the first video of their pre-launch and Maria really kicks as, I want to get the product, but I’m afraid it’s where “women go to make it big, not men” LOL – I did send the link to my girlfriend, she’s getting into photography and I think that’s like the perfect product that can help her get to the next level.

Anyway thanks guys for investing time on this, a post idea just POPPED into my head, better go write it down…

The whole “connecting with an experience” is something that I’m relearning. Once upon a time, I think that knowledge was second nature to me but I somehow forgot it when I started working with data and numbers. I think it is so true that people want to increase their experiences even over their possessions.

I recently asked people to tell me what extravagant thing they would like to do this next year if money were no object. The majority of people responded with things they would like to experience; it was a much MUCH higher number than that of purchasing things or even achieving personal goals. People want to enhance their lives through experience.

Now, if I can just keep that in the front part of my brain, I’ll do much better. :D

    Hey, Wilson–

So glad you enjoyed the interview and got some good stuff out of it. David and I had a *blast* talking!

I’ve heard Johnny B. Truant mention several times that he and his family currently live in Cleveland, but he doesn’t seem too thrilled with that and has expressed that he’d like to leave. Me, I think I’m pretty well grounded here in Northeast Ohio for the foreseeable future. Perhaps there should be an Ohio meet-up in our future? :)

As for the Rich, Happy & Hot B-School, I am *so* excited and put myself on their Early Bird Registration list. Very curious about what the price will be. Wish I could say that price wouldn’t be a consideration in whether I purchase, but it will. But even if it’s $500 {or more? — gulp!} I have a feeling it’ll be worth it.

    David and Abby,

Great stuff here. I’m really glad to see that you have taken the initiative to start a podcast. As you’re seeing it’s probably one of the greatest relationship building tools out there. Thanks to you I’m also learning about people who weren’t on my radar before so that’s been awesome.

You’ll also find that you’ll have so many new ideas and concepts to test out yourself when you interview people and they share their ideas.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Dude! I’m so thankful for the article you wrote on Think Traffic. I’m pretty sure that I would not have started podcasting had it not been for that.

As someone who has been doing this for a while, you must have built up some awesome relationships with people and learned some amazing stuff. I think we’re getting close to needing you to produce some sort of information product, eh?

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

      David –

Can you link to the post that Srini published on Think Traffic? I bet I read it way back when but I’d like to revisit, and bet others would, too.

      Thanks!

    Srini –

I think I speak for David when I say this, but my podcast addiction largely started with you and BlogcastFM. For anyone who hasn’t checked out BlogcastFM yet — do yourself a favor. You will learn so much!

Thanks so much. BlogcastFM has been one of my most fortunate
accidents in my blogging life. But it’s the people who allow
me to interview them that make it what it is IMO. Our new
free Blogger Gems V2 ebook should be out next week, and as
far as info products @David, they’re coming soon. I’ve
just been trying to think of the best way to build something
that doesn’t get in the way of my surf schedule :)

    yeah Abby!

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Danielle! Thank you so much for stopping by and encouraging Abby. She’s fantastic…and has a pretty high opinion of you too (as do I!)

  • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

    Hey, hey, Danielle! –

Thanks for visiting! David and I talked a lot about you and your influence upon me and my current biz, but I think it was *before* we started recording. Ugh. My travels in this corner of the blogosphere started with you and the Resource List you gave me after our FireStarter Session last Fall. I started by checking out Sarah Bray from S. Joy Studios and that led to me to Naomi Dunford, etc., etc.

So I have YOU to thank — hugely — for inspiring me so much and letting me know that I CAN do this!

Oops! Just noticed I haven’t been using threaded comments. Sorry, David.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

      HA HA! No worries.

  • http://www.lifestyleignition.com Mark Lawrence

Great podcast! I’m warming up to and loving the music intro and exits lol. Very interesting perspectives Abby. I like the differences in each podcast, and the ease and relaxed yet informational vibe.

    • http://abbykerrink.com Abby Kerr

Glad you enjoyed it, Mark. This was so much fun to do — I think it could be addicting.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

      It is addicting! Be forewarned.

    • http://www.HeroicDestiny.com David Crandall

Just you wait until you visit; you’ll realize just how much I listen to techno and trance. Ha!

It’s going to be a fantastic ride full of dance and Tab!

    • http://www.lifestyleignition.com Mark Lawrence

Ha, can’t wait. I’m salivating at the thought of those
cold cans of Tab soft drink!
